En banc is a legal term (derived from French, meaning "in the bench") that denotes when an entire appellate court sits to review a case, as opposed to the common appellate practice of sitting in panels. For example, most appellate courts sit in three-judge panels. If an appellate court decides to hear a case en banc, it is likely because the case is of some importance.
