Francis X. Flaherty (b. January 8, 1947) is a justice on the Rhode Island Supreme Court. Justice Flaherty was appointed to the bench by Republican Governor Donald Carcieri in 2003. Rhode Island is the only state in the union to appoint justices for life.
Education
Justice Flaherty is a graduate of Suffolk University Law School and Providence College and served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970.[1]
Legal career
Flaherty was elected mayor of Warwick, RI serving from 1985 to 1990 and previously served as a Warwick City Councilman from 1979 to 1985. He was also Assistant City Solicitor of Warwick from 1975 to 1978 and served on the Board of Governors for Higher Education from 1998 to 2003 before being appointed to the Supreme Court by Governor Donald Carcieri in 2003.
