August 19, 2008 Primary results: Bond ousted
For Position 3, sitting Justice Mary Fairhurst defeated Michael Bond (409,033 to 258,358, or 61.29% to 38.71%).[1]
Newspaper endorsements
The Seattle Times has editorially endorsed challenger Michael Bond over Fairhurst. According to their editorial board, "Bond has a sharp mind, he knows the law and he presents a compelling case to replace the one-term Mary Fairhurst. In a sentence, the case is this: Fairhurst, who used to have a job defending the government, accepts the government's arguments — and excuses — far too much now that she is on the court".[2]

"The courts are where our citizens go to seek justice. I have spent over 28 years in court helping people with real problems from all walks of life who seek justice. Since 1997 I’ve helped run my own small business, and we provide our employees a good place to work with excellent benefits. Over the years, I’ve learned that the most important role of the courts is to protect the people from the power of government and the vested interests. To fulfill that responsibility, a judge should have a broad range of experience in and outside the law, clearly understand the difference between serving as judge and serving as legislator, and possess the courage to speak truth to power. Our State Constitution established a government of limited power, but in too many opinions the incumbent voted to increase government power by approving government secrecy over public records; and she voted in ways that trample on our constitutional rights, overruling property rights, reducing privacy rights, and censoring free speech. Judicial evaluations
Bond, a construction-industry attorney, who often represents architects, real estate agents and engineers, has been rated "qualified" by the King County Bar Association and "not qualified" by the Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys.[4]
