Richard N. Palmer has served on the Connecticut Supreme Court since 1993.

Legal education and experience

Justice Palmer graduated from Trinity College in Hartford where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1972. He received his J.D., with high honors, from the University of Connecticut School of Law, in 1977 and was admitted to the Connecticut Bar that same year.

Upon graduation from law school, Justice Palmer served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jon O. Newman. Justice Palmer was an associate with the Hartford Law firm of Shipman & Goodwin from 1978-80. He thereafter served as an Assistant United States Attorney for Connecticut from 1980-83 and from 1987-90. From 1984-86, he practiced privately with the firm of Chatigny and Palmer. In 1991, he was appointed to the position of United States Attorney for Connecticut. From 1991-93, he was the Chief State's Attorney for Connecticut.[1]

Notable opinions

Palmer wrote the majority opinion in Kerrigan & Mock v. Connecticut Dept. of Public Health, the October 10, 2008 decision that legalized same-sex marriage in Connecticut.[2]
