Warren W. Matthews has served on the Alaska Supreme Court since 1977, when he was appointed by then-governor Jay Hammond, a Republican. His current ten-year term expires in 2010.

Legal background

Matthews holds a B.A. degree from Stanford University (1961) and J.D. from Harvard University Law School (1964). He was in private practice in Anchorage from 1965 through 1977. He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Alaska Bar Association, the Alaska Bar Ethics and Unauthorized Practices Committee, and the Supreme Court Criminal Rules Revision Committee.

He was appointed to the Alaska Supreme Court on May 26, 1977. He served as Chief Justice from October 1987 to September 1990, and July 1997 to June 2000. He was former Board Member and Second Vice-President, Conference of Chief Justices.

Justice Matthews was chairman of the Alaska Judicial Council from October 1987 through September 1990, and July 1997 to June 2000. He served on the Alaska Sentencing Commission, 1990 through 1993. [1]
